A massive fire broke out at Gaffar Market in Central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area early Sunday affecting at least a dozen shops and a firefighter was injured in the process of dousing the blaze, said officials of the Delhi Fire Services (DFS).

“There are no injuries or deaths, except one of our firefighters who was slightly hurt. We don’t know how the fire started at the moment,” said Ravinder Singh, DFS Additional Divisional Officer. “There is no danger from the fire at the moment. The main risk is that the buildings have been damaged by the fire,” added Singh.

According to fire department officials, the fire was located in a shoe market in Gaffar Market. The DFS officials added that they received a call around 4:16 am regarding a fire near a sweet shop in Karol Bagh’s Gaffar Market. They added that as many as 39 fire tenders were dispatched to control the Gaffar Market fire.

Volunteers from Civil Defence maintained a cordon as firefighters brought the fire under control. A large crowd also approached from a nearby street, but was dispersed by the police.

A group of the local shopkeepers waited anxiously near the fire trucks, while other residents distributed water and tea to firefighters and Civil Defence volunteers in the area. Meanwhile, thick smoke could be seen emerging from the upper floors of the burning buildings.

Local shopkeeper Praveen, who lives nearby, said that he had heard about the fire at 5 am and rushed to check on it. He said, “Thankfully my shop did not catch fire. The firefighters stopped it from going further. I have not been able to check personally, however.”

Nitin, another shopkeeper, said the alarm was raised around 4 am. He said, “Some sweepers noticed the fire and woke the locals. We contacted a passing PCR vehicle and the fire department was alerted.” Nitin, whose shop was close to the fire, said that most locals would not have insurance.

Amarjit, also a shopkeeper, said, “What can be said when so much harm is caused to one’s livelihood.”

DFS officials at the spot said that the fire had been brought under control and cooling operations had started.
