A part of an under-construction tunnel at Khoni Nallah on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district collapsed on Thursday night during an audit, injuring four people and trapping several others, officials said. The collapsed portion is about 30 to 40 metres inside the tunnel.

A joint rescue operation was launched immediately by police and the army after a small portion of the front side of the tunnel collapsed. The intermittent shooting stones, however, have been hampering the rescue operation.

Three workers have been rescued and at least 10 people are believed to be still trapped under the debris, according to officials.

Ramban Deputy Commissioner Massaratul Islam and Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma were at the spot supervising the rescue operation.

Officials said that several machines and vehicles parked on the front side of the tunnel suffered damage.

Those trapped inside the tunnel belonged to Sarla Company, engaged in the construction of the tunnel. The missing workers have been identified as Jadav Roy, 23, Gautam Roy, 22, Sudhir Roy, 31, Dipak Roy, 33, Parimal Roy, 38, Shiva Chowhan, 26, Nawaraj Chowdhury, 26, Kushi Ram, 25, Mujaffar, 38, and Israt, 30.

Union minister Jitendra Singh said that the rescue operations are going on in full swing and the civil administration and police authorities are monitoring the situation.
