Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai has expressed surprise at the Congress party's reaction to recent comments made by BJP MP Anurag Thakur regarding the caste census. Bommai’s remarks come amid ongoing controversy surrounding Thakur’s statements and Congress’ protest against them.

In a statement, Bommai questioned the logic behind the Congress party’s stance on the caste census. “I am shocked. How can the caste census be conducted without asking about caste?” Bommai asked, challenging the party’s position on the issue. He suggested that Congress’ protest against Thakur’s comments is inconsistent with their own demand for a caste-based census.

Bommai further criticized Congress for what he described as an incongruent approach. “If they think they were insulted by Anurag Thakur, they are insulting the whole country by asking for a caste census. They are talking about caste census, and yet, why is it an insult when someone asks them about their own caste?” Bommai said.

The controversy centers on the broader debate about the necessity and implications of a caste-based census, with different political parties offering varied perspectives. Bommai’s comments highlight the ongoing tensions and disagreements over how caste data should be collected and utilized, reflecting the complexity of the issue in Indian politics.

Bommai’s remarks underscore the challenges faced by political parties as they navigate sensitive issues related to caste and identity, and they add to the ongoing discourse about the role of caste in Indian governance and society.
