BJP Leader Shehzad Poonawalla Criticizes Delhi Government’s Independence Day Arrangements

Controversy has erupted ahead of Delhi's Independence Day celebrations as BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticized Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot’s role in hoisting the National Flag on August 15, 2024. This comes in the wake of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's absence from the event.

Poonawalla's remarks center around the legitimacy and implications of who will perform the flag-hoisting duties. “It is not about hoisting the flag as much as it is about whose agenda will be carried forward,” Poonawalla stated. He alleged that Kejriwal, despite being absent, is involved in directing who should undertake the ceremonial task, which he claims breaches both legal and constitutional norms.

Poonawalla accused the Delhi government of violating the Tihar Prison Rules of 2018, insinuating that Kejriwal’s involvement in instructing the flag-hoisting arrangements is legally questionable. “Flag hoisting and unfurling on events and days of National importance are constitutionally bound,” he argued, suggesting that the procedures should adhere strictly to constitutional protocols and not be subject to political maneuvering.

The controversy has highlighted tensions between the BJP and the Delhi government, adding a political layer to the Independence Day celebrations. The BJP’s critique raises questions about the adherence to established norms and the political implications of ceremonial roles.

The Delhi government has yet to officially respond to Poonawalla’s criticisms. As Independence Day approaches, the focus remains on the ceremonial aspects of the event and the broader political discourse surrounding it.
