BJP MP Arun Govil has come forward to clarify the intentions behind the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, asserting that the legislation is not motivated by religious considerations but rather aims at administrative efficiency. Govil’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates and criticisms regarding the bill.

“I don’t think it’s about religion. Waqf is an organization that manages properties and the revenue generated from them. It should not be linked to religion,” Govil stated. His comments are a direct response to opposition claims that the bill may have religious undertones.

The BJP MP further defended the bill by emphasizing the clarity with which Union Minister Kiren Rijiju addressed opposition concerns. “Kiren Rijiju answered all questions of the opposition with utmost clarity leaving no ounce of doubt,” Govil said, accusing the opposition of opposing government initiatives merely for the sake of opposition. “The opposition opposes everything just for the sake of it,” he added.

Govil also highlighted that the bill seeks to rectify mistakes from the Waqf Board Amendment in 1995, framing these corrections as a positive step. “If mistakes made during the Waqf Board Amendment in 1995 need to be rectified and it is a good thing... This is not anti-Muslim,” he emphasized.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill has been a topic of intense debate, with various political factions weighing in on its implications. Govil’s defense aims to address concerns and clarify the bill’s objectives, focusing on its administrative and procedural aspects rather than any religious biases.
