On the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency in India, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj called it a "dark chapter" in Indian democracy and urged citizens, especially the youth, to study history closely to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

Speaking at a commemorative event in Delhi, Swaraj stated, “Studying history is important because history tends to repeat itself if we don’t learn from past mistakes. The Emergency was not just a political misjudgment—it was the murder of democracy in independent India.”

She stressed the need for national reflection on the Emergency period (1975–1977), when civil liberties were suspended, the press was censored, and thousands of political leaders and citizens were jailed without trial. “Understanding the cost of silence and unchecked power is essential for protecting the democratic values we hold dear today,” she added.

Bansuri Swaraj’s remarks echo the broader BJP-led campaign this year to remind citizens of the excesses of that era, as the party marks 50 years since the Emergency with events, speeches, and educational drives across the country.
