BJP Organizes Protest Against Electricity Bill Hike; Delhi BJP Chief Detained

New Delhi, India - Delhi BJP State Chief Virendra Sachdeva led a sizable protest today against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's recent adjustments to electricity bills, particularly targeting the Power Purchase Adjustment Charge (PPAC). The demonstration, held near Shaheedi Park, highlighted concerns over what the BJP claims are inflated electricity costs burdening Delhi's residents.

The focus of the protest centered on the PPAC, which BJP leaders allege has led to substantial increases in electricity bills for consumers across the city. The party contends that these adjustments are causing financial strain, especially amid rising costs of coal and other fuels used in power generation.

During the protest, Delhi Police detained Virendra Sachdeva, capturing the moment on video as he was escorted into a police van. Sachdeva later reposted the footage on his social media platforms, drawing attention to the incident and emphasizing the BJP's commitment to addressing public grievances.

In response to the anticipated traffic disruptions caused by the protest, the Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories warning of potential road closures and heavy congestion near Shaheedi Park between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM.

The controversy stems from recent increases in electricity bills affecting domestic consumers by 6-8%. This adjustment is attributed to the PPAC modifications mandated by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), allowing for increases due to escalated power purchase costs.

Delhi's Power Minister and AAP leader Atishi defended the revisions, citing legal provisions that authorize Discoms (Distribution Companies) to adjust the PPAC by up to 10% from the prescribed rate, based on increased power purchase expenditures.

The BJP's protest underscores ongoing tensions between the ruling AAP and opposition parties regarding the cost of essential utilities. While the AAP defends the necessity of adjusting electricity bills in line with market realities, the BJP argues for measures to alleviate financial burdens on Delhi's residents.

As the debate continues to unfold, stakeholders await further developments and potential resolutions that could impact electricity pricing policies and consumer affordability in the national capital.
