BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla Slams West Bengal Government Over OBC Certificate Cancellation

In a scathing critique of the West Bengal government's policies, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shehzad Poonawalla has lambasted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the Calcutta High Court's decision to invalidate all Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates issued in the state post-2010. Poonawalla's remarks come amidst a charged political atmosphere, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) facing mounting criticism over alleged vote bank politics.

Addressing the media, Poonawalla highlighted the ramifications of the High Court's ruling, which has resulted in the suspension of approximately 5 lakh OBC certificates. He asserted that the decision underscored the West Bengal government's penchant for appeasement politics at the expense of marginalized communities, particularly the OBCs.

"The High Court's decision has shown how, only for vote bank and appeasement politics, Mamata Banerjee's government gave the rights that were meant for the OBC community to Muslims on religious grounds," Poonawalla declared, accusing the TMC of prioritizing electoral considerations over the welfare of OBCs.

Poonawalla further contended that the cancellation of OBC certificates was indicative of a broader pattern of disenfranchisement targeting OBCs, Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities in West Bengal. He accused the state government of systematically undermining the rights and entitlements of these marginalized groups in a bid to consolidate its voter base.

The BJP leader also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent challenge to opposition parties regarding the issue of reservation. "When the Prime Minister even challenged them (INDIA alliance) to write in writing that reservation will not be given on religious grounds or by cutting it from OBC, SC-ST quota, they did not accept this challenge," Poonawalla asserted, implying a lack of commitment to upholding reservation policies that benefit OBCs, SCs, and STs.

As the political fallout from the Calcutta High Court's ruling reverberates across West Bengal, Poonawalla's remarks underscore growing concerns over the politicization of reservation policies and the implications for social justice and equity. With elections on the horizon, the debate over OBC rights and representation is likely to take center stage, shaping the contours of electoral discourse in the state.
