NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old man died in a freak accident after the scooter he was riding rammed the glass panel at the Vidhan Sabha metro station in north Delhi on Monday night.
According to police, the incident took place around 10 pm when Tirath Singh was returning home from Wazirabad after meeting the family of an ailing friend. Cops said preliminary investigation revealed he was riding his scooter at a high speed and crashed into the glass that covered the staircase at gate number 1 of the metro station. The impact was such that his two-wheeler remained stuck in the glass.
Singh's family has alleged that another vehicle might have hit his scooter and caused the accident.

"We scanned CCTV footage after his family members said they suspected foul play, but so far it appears Singh was riding at a high speed when he suddenly hit the glass, which is close to the road, and fell." We are continuing to look at more footage. "A drunk person earlier spread a rumour that someone hit Singh from behind, but when we questioned him, he did not say anything," said an officer.

A spot visit on Wednesday revealed that the site is very close to the road and can be a potential danger as any vehicle can easily hit the glass, leading to an untoward incident. Rickshaw-pullers and auto drivers stationed outside the metro station urged that a grill should be put up as the road sees traffic through the day. It would keep pedestrians safe too, since the metro station is crowded, they said.
Singh's son-in-law Ankit, meanwhile, alleged that this was a case of murder.
"My father-in-law had a disc problem and had gone to get it treated by a pehalwan. His friend's son called him asking for help since his father, who is in the Bhajanpura area, was not well. The family said that he was dropped off at Wazirabad and was on his way home to Majnu Ka Tilla. People we met later at the location told us that two men on a bike were trying to attack or rob my father-in-law. We believe they must have kicked him or he must have increased the bike's speed to escape, which led to the fatal accident. We want the police to investigate the case properly, "said Ankit."
