Delhi CM Flags Off 200 New Electric Buses, Boosts Green Public Transport Push

New Delhi, April 2026: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 200 new electric buses, marking a major step in the capital’s push towards clean and sustainable public transport.


Major Addition to Delhi’s EV Bus Fleet

With the latest rollout, Delhi’s total bus fleet has reached around 6,300 buses, with a significant portion now powered by electricity.

Officials said the number of electric buses in the city has already crossed 4,500, with a target to reach 7,000 by the end of 2026.


Push Towards ‘Green Delhi’ Vision

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said the initiative is part of the government’s broader vision of building a “Green, Smart and Clean Delhi.”

The addition of electric buses is expected to:

  • Reduce vehicular pollution
  • Improve public transport efficiency
  • Promote eco-friendly urban mobility

Expansion of EV-Based Transport Network

Alongside the bus rollout, the government also:

  • Launched a Delhi–Rohtak inter-state electric bus service
  • Inaugurated a new bus terminal at Madanpur Khadar
  • Opened a new administrative facility at the East Vinod Nagar depot

These steps aim to strengthen connectivity and modernise transport infrastructure.


Mission to Fully Electrify Public Transport

The Delhi government is working in mission mode to transition the entire public transport system to electric vehicles, aligning with its clean energy and anti-pollution strategy.

Electric buses are equipped with modern facility such as:

  • GPS tracking
  • CCTV cameras
  • Improved passenger comfort systems

Strengthening India’s Largest Bus Network

Delhi already operates one of India’s largest bus networks, with buses catering to a significant share of daily commuters.

The increasing adoption of electric buses is expected to further enhance efficiency, sustainability, and commuter experience.
