Delhi CM Rekha Gupta: Government to Act on End-of-Life Vehicles Amid Pollution Concerns

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta addressed growing concerns about air pollution in the capital, stating that the government is actively working on a plan to phase out End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), in line with recommendations from the Supreme Court and pollution control bodies, including the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

“In light of pollution in Delhi, the Supreme Court and pollution control bodies have consistently stated that ELVs should be phased out. Such vehicles should not be allowed to refuel,” said CM Gupta, underlining the government’s intent to take firm steps toward improving the city's deteriorating air quality.

She added that authorities are considering restricting the sale of petrol and diesel to ELVs, which have exceeded their permissible operational life. In this context, the Supreme Court has suggested the installation of surveillance cameras at fuel stations to track and prevent fuel supply to banned vehicles. The Delhi government, she said, is examining the feasibility of implementing such a system.

The initiative is expected to be part of a larger strategy to curb vehicular emissions, a major contributor to Delhi’s pollution levels. Officials are also exploring technological solutions and inter-agency coordination for stricter enforcement.

CM Gupta emphasized that public health and environmental sustainability are top priorities and that these reforms, once finalized, will be implemented swiftly.
