New Delhi, April 6: The Delhi government has earmarked a record ₹22,236 crore — around 21% of its 2026–27 state budget — for environmental initiatives, reflecting a major push towards sustainability, pollution control, and climate resilience. The move marks one of the most ambitious environmentally focused fiscal plans for the national capital.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that the budget is designed to integrate green objectives across all departments, ensuring coordinated action on air pollution, water conservation, waste management, and renewable energy projects. “Clean Delhi, Green Delhi is no longer just a slogan,” she said, emphasizing measurable outcomes and accountability in every department receiving green funding.

Yamuna Clean-Up Receives Largest Share

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been allocated the largest share of the green fund — ₹6,485 crore — to focus on cleaning the Yamuna River and expanding sewage treatment infrastructure. The funds will support:

Construction and upgrade of sewage treatment plants
Interception of major drains polluting the river
Reduction of untreated sewage discharge into the Yamuna
Improvement in water quality to meet national environmental standards
Other Major Allocations
Transport Sector: ₹4,758 crore for electric buses, charging infrastructure, and low-emission public transport systems
Public Works Department (PWD): ₹3,350 crore to control dust pollution and develop green infrastructure
Planning & Urban Development: ₹2,350 crore for designing and executing urban environmental projects
Urban Development & DUSIB: ₹2,273 crore for targeted environmental interventions
Power Department: ₹1,410 crore to promote renewable energy, including solar power

Several other departments, including Environment, Forest, Irrigation and Flood Control, Tourism, Education, and Health, will also receive funding for afforestation, eco-friendly tourism, pollution control measures, water conservation, and green infrastructure in schools and hospitals.

Focus on Accountability and Outcomes

The government has emphasized result-oriented spending, requiring all 17 departments receiving green allocations to report progress against specific targets. Officials stated that this approach ensures tangible improvements in air quality, water quality, and sustainable urban living conditions.

The budget reflects Delhi’s commitment to transforming the city into a sustainable and environmentally resilient metropolis, while encouraging citizen engagement and investment in green projects.
