External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has responded to recent concerns raised by Tamil Nadu fishermen following a meeting with key associations and stakeholders. The discussions highlighted a troubling increase in the detention of Indian fishermen and an unfortunate incident resulting in the death of one fisherman.

During the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar acknowledged the rising tensions and the significant impact these issues have on the livelihoods, safety, and security of the fishermen. He noted that some of the concerns addressed were within the purview of the Foreign Ministry, while others fell under the Fisheries Ministry. The Secretary of the Fisheries Ministry was also present at the meeting to provide insights and support.

Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that the situation should not be politicized but approached as a serious issue affecting the fishermen's daily lives and work. He assured that both the Union Government and the Indian High Commission have been actively involved in addressing these challenges. Recently, 20 detained fishermen were released, reflecting ongoing efforts to resolve the issue.

The External Affairs Minister proposed the formation of a joint working group and a meeting with the fishermen's associations to further address their concerns and explore practical solutions. He reiterated his commitment to finding a reasonable way to manage the situation effectively, emphasizing that the government remains dedicated to supporting the fishing community.

This development is expected to improve dialogue between the fishermen's associations and government agencies, aiming to ensure better safety and working conditions for those dependent on fishing as their primary source of livelihood.
