Delhi, India — In a significant gathering of global food safety leaders, the FSSAI Global Food Regulators Summit 2024 kicked off today, with Union Minister JP Nadda addressing critical issues concerning food safety, pesticide residues, and plastic pollution. His remarks underscored the pressing need for a collective global response to these challenges.

During his keynote speech, Minister Nadda highlighted the risks posed by pesticide residues in food, emphasizing their potential impact on human health. “India’s commitment to promoting organic farming and alternative pest control methods marks a step in the right direction. However, we must encourage more widespread adoption of these practices globally,” he stated.

The minister also addressed the alarming rise of plastic waste, which constitutes 80% of marine pollution. Recent studies have raised concerns about microplastics finding their way into the human body, prompting urgent calls for action. “Our efforts to develop eco-friendly packaging solutions are crucial. We must not only reduce environmental impact but also ensure that these alternatives are safe for health,” Nadda added.

In a move aimed at bolstering research and innovation in food safety and related sectors, the Government of India announced the establishment of the National Research Foundation. With a budget allocation of approximately 5.96 billion US dollars for the period from 2024 to 2028, this initiative aims to enhance scientific research capabilities and foster collaboration among various stakeholders.

The summit, attended by food regulators from around the world, serves as a platform for sharing best practices and developing comprehensive strategies to tackle food safety and environmental challenges.

As discussions continue, the focus remains on collaborative efforts to enhance food safety standards, promote sustainable practices, and mitigate the environmental impacts of food production and packaging.
