New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has announced that elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on April 29, 2026, in the MCD House. The election will decide the next civic leadership of the national capital.

According to official arrangements, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected through a voting process involving all elected councillors of the MCD. The House meeting is scheduled to be convened on the announced date, during which nominations will be filed followed by voting.

The Mayor of Delhi is elected indirectly by councillors of the municipal House. The process is conducted under the provisions governing municipal administration in Delhi, where elected representatives vote to choose the city’s civic head.

The post of Mayor also follows a rotational reservation system, which ensures representation from different categories on a yearly basis as per the roster system.

The election is expected to witness close attention from major political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Aam Aadmi Party, and the Indian National Congress.

The outcome will depend on the strength of party representation within the MCD House. The Mayor’s post, though largely ceremonial in powers compared to the civic administration, plays a key role in setting the tone for municipal governance and public representation.

The Mayor presides over meetings of the MCD House and represents the corporation at official events. The office is considered important for coordinating civic priorities such as sanitation, infrastructure upkeep, and local development initiatives across Delhi.

MCD mayoral elections are held annually. The rotational system of reservation ensures that different categories get representation in successive terms. The upcoming election is therefore part of the regular civic cycle mandated for municipal governance.
