Tension escalated in the national capital on Saturday as Delhi Police used water cannons to disperse BJP leaders and workers who staged a protest against the alleged derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during a Mahagathbandhan rally in Darbhanga, Bihar.

The BJP leaders accused the opposition alliance of crossing all limits of political decency by resorting to personal attacks. Party workers, carrying placards and chanting slogans, marched towards key locations in the city, demanding an apology from Congress and RJD leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, who were present at the rally.

As the protesters attempted to move past barricades, police resorted to water cannon deployment to control the situation. Several BJP workers were detained during the demonstration. The protest saw participation from senior party leaders in Delhi, who condemned the remarks as an insult not just to the Prime Minister but also to Indian culture and values.

“The opposition has no agenda left, so they have stooped to abusing the Prime Minister’s late mother. This is a shameful act that reflects their frustration after repeated electoral defeats,” said one BJP leader at the protest site.

Delhi Police, meanwhile, said the action was taken to maintain law and order and prevent disruption of public movement.

The controversy over the remarks has snowballed into a major political row, with BJP intensifying its nationwide protests and vowing to take the issue to the people ahead of upcoming elections.
