New Delhi - As anticipation builds for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Russia, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has underscored the significance of the annual summit between India and Russia, emphasizing its role in strengthening bilateral relations.

In a statement reflecting on the delay in previous annual summits, Jaishankar highlighted the tradition of these meetings as essential for both countries, given their longstanding history of cooperation. "There was a bit of a delay in our annual summits, but it is a good tradition. We are two countries with a strong history of working together," he remarked.

Jaishankar recalled his recent visit to Moscow, where he conveyed Prime Minister Modi's commitment to reinstating the annual summit promptly. "Last year when I went to Moscow, I carried a message from the PM that we are committed to the annual summit and we will do it sooner," he affirmed, stressing the regularity of these summits as a crucial mechanism for assessing and enhancing bilateral ties.

The External Affairs Minister highlighted the remarkable growth in India-Russia economic relations as one of the pivotal developments in recent years. "One of the biggest changes has been that our economic relationship with Russia has grown tremendously," Jaishankar noted, pointing to the leadership level talks between PM Modi and President Vladimir Putin as an opportunity to further bolster economic cooperation.

"The upcoming meeting between PM Modi and President Putin will be a great opportunity for them to sit down and directly talk to each other," Jaishankar emphasized, anticipating substantive discussions on various facets of the bilateral relationship.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia from July 8-9, at the invitation of President Putin, to participate in the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. The discussions during the visit are expected to cover strategic, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two nations, aiming to strengthen the partnership across multiple domains.

As India prepares to engage with Russia at the highest diplomatic level, the visit underscores the shared commitment to enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation in an evolving global landscape.
