This gang of high-tech vehicle thieves stole cars by using a software-based hacking device. After formatting the existing software of the car, they would install new software using the device and prepare a new key. The entire process would take 3-5 minutes.

DCP (Southwest) Manoj C said the accused were identified as Manish Rao (42), Jagdeep Sharma (43) and Aas Mohammad (40).

Rao and Sharma were nabbed while dealing with a stolen Creta. Two pistols (a.32 bore and a country-made) with five live cartridges were seized from them. Mohammad, who was nabbed later, was found to be the main supplier of the stolen cars. He sold the vehicles to buyers in Rajasthan by using the numbers of "total loss" cars of the same make and colour. In all, five more high-end stolen cars were recovered in this instance. "Total loss" cars are accidental vehicles sold as scrap by insurance companies.

"Sharma and Mohammad are members of the Ravi Uttam Nagar gang and were earlier involved in around 25 cases of vehicle theft," said the DCP.

The gang stole more than 40 cars since April this year from Uttam Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Subash Nagar, Paschim Vihar, Munirka, and Dwarka. They sold these to receivers in various places in Rajasthan and Meerut. After stealing the cars, they parked them in parking lots, outside societies and near hospitals, especially where no CCTV camera was installed. Based on demand, they transported the same to the buyers or receivers.

In another operation by the Central district police, two men who ran an organised racket of stealing cars on demand and selling them to lucrative buyers in Pune were arrested. The module comprised receivers of stolen cars, and 15 vehicles were recovered. The accused were identified as Azruddin (24) and Altaf Kasam (38).

Shweta Chauhan, DCP (Central), said, "Azruddin received stolen vehicles from Intezar and Bhura, who were arrested earlier." He used to sell them to Altaf Kasam Attar, based on his requirements. They used to change the engine numbers with those of totally damaged vehicles. They would put the registration number of such cars on the stolen ones. "

The accused had shifted base from Meerut to Pune as local police had cracked down on them. During interrogation, Azruddin confessed that he was the receiver of stolen cars. Through his links in Pune, he sold the stolen cars to Attar.

Azruddin entered the criminal world to earn a quick buck. Later, he started working with Attar, who would buy "total loss" accidental vehicles from insurance companies as scrap. He would provide the details of the accidental vehicles to Azruddin. The latter would then buy vehicles from car thieves and sell them to Attar.
