India Accelerates Semiconductor Manufacturing with Four New Units

  • March 13, 2024, 3:46 p.m.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday that India is making significant strides in semiconductor manufacturing, with four new units being established across the country. This move is a testament to the rapid progress being made under the double-engine government.

“One of the four semiconductor units is coming up in Assam,” Vaishnaw said, highlighting the government’s commitment to developing technology infrastructure in the northeastern states. The other locations for the new units have not been disclosed yet.

The establishment of these plants is a significant step towards making India self-reliant in semiconductor production, a sector currently dominated by countries like Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States. Semiconductors are a critical component in a wide range of products, from computers and smartphones to cars and home appliances.

The minister further added, “The four plants are an example of work being done at a great pace under the double-engine government.” This statement underscores the government’s commitment to fast-tracking India’s technological advancement.

In a significant development, the cabinet gave its approval on 29th February 2024 for TATA & CG power plants. This move is expected to boost India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imports.

Vaishnaw also revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stone for these plants within 15 days. The quick turnaround from approval to the commencement of construction is indicative of the government’s urgency in ramping up domestic production of semiconductors.

The establishment of these semiconductor units is expected to create numerous job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. It also aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to transform India into a global design and manufacturing hub.

In conclusion, the establishment of four new semiconductor units marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a global leader in technology and manufacturing. With the government’s commitment and the industry’s support, India is well on its way to achieving this goal.
