Delhi, India - In a significant development, India has finalized a long-term agreement with Iran on the strategic Chabahar Port, marking a new era of connectivity. The announcement was made by India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM), Dr. S. Jaishankar.

“We’ve been trying for almost 20 years now to have an agreement with Iran,” said Dr. Jaishankar. “We could have a short-term agreement because there were a lot of problems on their side. But in recent months, thanks to the two people who unfortunately died yesterday in the helicopter crash, the president of Iran and the foreign minister of Iran, we were able to finalize a long-term agreement.”

The agreement is seen as a significant milestone in India’s strategic interests. “This is very important because one of the big things in the world connectivity corridor… India’s position will be very much at the centre of this whole thing. It will benefit us,” added Dr. Jaishankar.

The Chabahar Port agreement is not just about a port. It is part of a larger connectivity change that India is looking at. The strategic location of the Chabahar Port, located in the Gulf of Oman, provides India with direct access to Iran and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.

The long-term agreement signifies India’s commitment to enhancing its connectivity and deepening its ties with Iran. It also underscores India’s role in the global connectivity corridor, positioning it at the centre of this transformative initiative.

The tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of the president of Iran and the foreign minister of Iran brought a sense of urgency to the negotiations. Their interest and initiative were instrumental in finalizing the agreement.

As India looks forward to the benefits of this agreement, it also pays tribute to the two Iranian leaders whose efforts have made this possible. The Chabahar Port agreement is indeed something bigger than a port - it is a symbol of India’s growing connectivity and strategic depth in the region.
