India Puts Indus Water Treaty in Abeyance: Gajendra Singh Shekhawat Reaffirms PM Modi’s Stand

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Tuesday reiterated India’s firm decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration that “blood and water cannot flow together.”

Speaking to the media in Delhi, Shekhawat stated, “PM Modi has made it very clear — in his past statements and again in his address to the nation — that India will no longer tolerate terrorism and still honor agreements like the Indus Water Treaty. Despite the wars of 1965, 1971, and Kargil, India continued to uphold the treaty in good faith. But this time, the message is clear: India’s interests will not be compromised.”

The Union Minister confirmed that the government has stopped sharing river data with Pakistan and is now committed to utilizing every drop of water allocated to India under the treaty. He emphasized that the treaty has been suspended due to Pakistan's continued support for cross-border terrorism, particularly in light of the recent Pahalgam attack and escalating tensions.

This move marks a significant shift in India’s strategic posture, signaling that national security and self-interest will take precedence in bilateral engagements with Pakistan.
