India wraps up Asian U-17 Boxing campaign with 2 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze medals

India performed brilliantly at the Asian Under-15 and Under-17 Boxing Championships 2026 held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, winning a total of 17 medals. This included 2 gold, 7 silver, and 8 bronze medals in the Under-17 category. Our women boxers performed exceptionally well in these competitions, proving that India is poised to excel in boxing in the future.

The Indian Under-17 girls team played a major role in the country’s medal tally, securing 12 medals overall, including two gold medals, six silver medals, and four bronze medals. The boys’ squad contributed one silver and four bronze medals during the competition.

India’s gold medal winners were Rakhi (46kg) and Navya (57kg), both of whom delivered dominant performances in their respective finals. Rakhi claimed gold after registering an RSC victory in the second round against Uzbekistan’s Rukhshonabonu Ahadova. Navya secured India’s second gold medal with a convincing 4-0 win over Japan’s Sara Kono in the 57kg final.

Several Indian boxers also reached the finals but finished with silver medals after competitive bouts against opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Japan. Khushi Chand (48kg) lost 1-4 to Japan’s Arisa Yoshinaga, while Diya (63kg) and Himanshi (70kg) were defeated by Uzbek boxers Mehrimakh Kilichova and Karina Ilmuratova respectively.

In other finals, Jyoti (75kg) lost 1-4 to Kazakhstan’s Diana Nadyrebek, while Vanshika (80kg) suffered a 0-5 defeat against Zhansaya Yerzhan of Kazakhstan. In the 80+kg category, Gurseerat Kaur narrowly lost 2-3 to Uzbekistan’s Sohibakhon Khudoyberdieva, settling for silver.

Among the boys, Lakshay Phogat (75kg) emerged as India’s only finalist in the category. He finished with a silver medal after losing 0-5 to Uzbekistan’s Marufjon Toshpulatov in the title clash. Earlier in the tournament, Lakshay had reached the final with a dominant semifinal victory over South Korea’s Seungmin Lee.

The Indian contingent’s performance reflected consistent progress in the country’s youth boxing programme. Coaches and officials associated with the team said the results showed improved technical discipline and depth across multiple weight categories. India’s success at junior and youth-level tournaments in recent years has been viewed as an important step toward building a stronger pipeline for future senior international competitions.

Many strong Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Japan, Mongolia, and South Korea, participated in this boxing championship. Indian boxers faced tough competition, with many bouts decided by very close margins.
