Indian Railways has significantly increased women’s participation in its workforce, reflecting its commitment to gender inclusion and empowerment, said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity Department, Railway Board.

Speaking on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Kumar highlighted that women's participation in the Indian Railways workforce has risen from 6.6% in 2014 to over 8.2% in 2024. With a total workforce of approximately 12.3 lakh employees, the number of women employees has crossed 1.13 lakh, demonstrating a steady rise in female representation across various roles.

"Indian Railways has always encouraged women employees and officers, which is why more women are keen to join. We are continuously making efforts to promote women's power and provide them with opportunities to contribute significantly," Kumar stated.

To mark International Women’s Day, several special initiatives were undertaken across the country:

  • In Mumbai, a Vande Bharat Express was operated entirely by women employees.
  • In Gorakhpur, the central panel of railway operations was managed by women staff.
  • Matunga station in Maharashtra and Gandhinagar station are among several railway stations fully operated by women throughout the year.

"Women are playing a huge role in driving the wheel of development in the country, and we encourage more women to join Indian Railways and contribute to nation-building," Kumar added.

The Indian Railways’ initiatives reflect a larger push toward gender equality in public sector employment, reinforcing its role as a progressive and inclusive employer in India.
