Jagdambika Pal Defends Waqf Amendment Bill Amidst Controversy and Protests

In a statement today, Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and BJP Member of Parliament, addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Bill. Pal pointed out the growing divide within the Muslim community over the Bill, noting that while many Muslim clerics support it, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed strong objections.

Pal highlighted the opposition's call for protests against the Bill, citing the AIMPLB’s directive for people to wear black armbands during 'Alvida Namaz' and their continued appeals for protests on Eid. "On the day of 'Alvida Namaz', they asked people to wear black armbands in protest against this bill, and even today, on Eid, they have appealed to people to protest against this bill. But why?" Pal questioned, urging critics to wait until the amended law is officially presented.

The BJP MP also reflected on the broader political landscape, asserting that while the ruling party has been advocating for "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" (inclusive progress for all), opposition parties like Congress, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party, and the AIMPLB are treating Muslims as a mere vote bank, practicing appeasement. "While we are talking of 'Sabka saath, sabka vikas', Congress, Owaisi, and AIMPLB are looking at Muslims as a vote bank, doing appeasement," Pal remarked.

Emphasizing the widespread support for the Bill, Pal noted that over 1.25 crore people have submitted representations in favor of the Waqf Amendment Bill. He further referenced the endorsement from prominent figures across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir’s Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who has also expressed support. "We even heard people from all over the country, including J&K's Mirwaiz Umar Farooq," he said.

Pal concluded his statement by confirming that the Bill would be tabled as per the date provided by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of Parliament, signaling that the legislative process would continue despite the controversy and opposition.

As the Waqf Amendment Bill moves forward, the debate surrounding it intensifies, with various factions within the Muslim community and political landscape voicing their concerns and support. The final outcome of the Bill’s legislative process remains to be seen, with significant implications for the management of Waqf properties and religious harmony.
