JPC Chairperson PP Chaudhary Highlights Economic Benefits of ‘One Nation, One Election’

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on One Nation, One Election convened in Delhi to deliberate on the potential economic and administrative impact of holding simultaneous elections across India. Addressing the media, BJP MP and JPC Chairperson PP Chaudhary underscored the transformative role the proposal could play in strengthening the economy and governance.

Chaudhary revealed that the committee has invited economists of national and international repute to provide insights on how simultaneous elections could influence India’s economic trajectory. Citing the Ram Nath Kovind committee report, he stated, “The report mentions that this reform could increase the GDP by 1.6%, which means that cumulatively, the country will benefit by nearly ₹7 lakh crore.” He added that committee members will also seek detailed clarifications on election expenditure to assess cost savings and long-term financial implications.

Highlighting the administrative challenges of frequent elections, Chaudhary noted that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) often disrupts governance. “Once the MCC is imposed, everyone—from officers to administrators—goes into election mode. This creates a governance vacuum and impacts key sectors, including tourism, where delays lead to significant losses,” he explained.

The JPC will examine both the benefits and potential drawbacks of simultaneous versus separate elections, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive analysis. Chaudhary emphasized that this initiative transcends political lines: “If elections happen simultaneously, it is possible that the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 could be achieved ahead of schedule. This is not a political matter but a matter of national interest. All members of the committee have a positive and constructive approach aligned with the country’s development goals.”

The discussions are expected to pave the way for a landmark reform that could redefine India’s electoral and economic landscape, with implications for governance efficiency, policy continuity, and fiscal savings.
