Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, has lauded the successful and uninterrupted debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha, calling it a "historic milestone." Speaking about the session, Rijiju highlighted that the discussion lasted a remarkable 17 hours and 2 minutes, setting a new record in the Indian Parliament.

“This is an important milestone that we have achieved in the Rajya Sabha. Yesterday, we created a new record — we discussed the Waqf Amendment Bill for 17 hours and 2 minutes,” Rijiju said. “It seems extremely difficult to break this record, and it is something the entire nation should be proud of. There was not a single disruption during the entire discussion, which is a testament to the seriousness with which the members engaged with the bill.”

The extended discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha was conducted without any interruptions, a rarity in parliamentary proceedings. Rijiju's comments come as the bill gains increasing attention for its far-reaching implications on the management and accountability of Waqf properties in India.

The debate was marked by extensive deliberations from lawmakers across the political spectrum, reflecting the importance and sensitivity of the bill, which seeks to improve transparency and regulate the misuse of Waqf properties. Rijiju emphasized that the smooth conduct of such a prolonged session signifies a positive shift in the functioning of Parliament and the government’s commitment to robust dialogue and accountability.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, aims to overhaul the management of Waqf properties by introducing greater transparency, including the establishment of a portal for registration and a system for auditing properties by a committee appointed by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

As the bill now moves towards becoming law, the 17-hour uninterrupted debate in the Rajya Sabha will be remembered as a significant moment in India’s parliamentary history, showcasing the ability of the legislature to engage deeply and meaningfully on important national issues.
