New Delhi, April 13: In a major boost to medical education infrastructure, the Delhi government has approved the construction of two new hostel buildings at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), addressing long-standing accommodation shortages faced by students.

The proposal, cleared by the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) chaired by the Chief Minister, involves a total investment of ₹573.41 crore.

 Project Details

The project includes:

  • One boys’ hostel with an estimated cost of ₹304.22 crore
  • One girls’ hostel costing ₹269.19 crore

Both hostels will be constructed within the MAMC campus at designated locations:

  • Site A: Girls’ hostel
  • Site B: Boys’ hostel

The buildings will include basement structures along with complete civil and electrical works.

 Timeline

The project is expected to be completed in 36 months, divided into:

  • 6 months for planning, approvals, and tendering
  • 30 months for construction

Officials indicated that construction work is likely to begin within the next six months.

 Why the Project is Needed

The expansion comes in response to a sharp rise in student intake at MAMC, which has increased from 150 to 250 students per year in recent years.

Existing hostel facilities, built between 1965 and 1982, are no longer sufficient to meet current demand. Students currently face:

  • Acute shortage of rooms
  • Compulsory sharing of accommodation
  • In some cases, lack of hostel allotment

 Objective

The new hostels aim to:

  • Provide modern and adequate residential facilities
  • Improve student living conditions
  • Support the growing demand for medical education in Delhi

The project is being developed as a non-commercial initiative, with land already available within the campus.

 Background

Maulana Azad Medical College is among India’s premier government medical institutions. The new hostel infrastructure is expected to significantly ease accommodation constraints and enhance the overall academic environment for students.
