NDMC Strengthens ‘Broom-Free City’ Mission with Modern Cleaning Machines

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has intensified its sanitation efforts under its ongoing “Broom-Free City” initiative, significantly expanding the use of mechanised cleaning systems across its jurisdiction in the capital.

As part of the latest drive, NDMC is focusing on replacing traditional manual sweeping with advanced mechanical road sweepers and litter-picking machines, aiming to make urban cleaning more efficient and reduce dust pollution. Officials said the move is designed to ensure faster, more systematic, and cleaner road maintenance across key areas of Lutyens’ Delhi.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to transform NDMC areas into a fully mechanised sanitation zone, with the deployment of modern equipment such as gobbler machines, road sweepers, and other automated cleaning systems. These machines are being used to improve coverage of major roads and reduce dependency on manual labour for street cleaning.

Authorities highlighted that the broom-free model is aimed at improving air quality and reducing particulate dust emissions, which are a major concern in Delhi’s pollution-prone environment. The mechanised approach is also expected to enhance efficiency during peak cleaning hours and ensure more consistent maintenance of public spaces.

The drive comes alongside NDMC’s wider sanitation reforms, which include increased use of technology-driven cleaning operations, better monitoring systems, and expansion of mechanised infrastructure to maintain cleaner roads and public areas.

Officials added that the initiative reflects a long-term vision to create a more sustainable and modern urban sanitation system, positioning NDMC areas as a model for cleaner, dust-free city management in the national capital.
