New Expressway Stretch to Transform Travel Between Delhi and Jewar Airport

Delhi: Commuters travelling from South Delhi to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar may soon be able to complete the journey in just 45 minutes, as the first Delhi stretch of the ambitious Delhi-Mumbai Expressway corridor is nearing completion. The access-controlled expressway segment connecting the DND Flyway to Jaitpur is expected to open within the next few weeks, significantly improving connectivity across Delhi-NCR.

The upcoming stretch forms part of the larger Delhi-Faridabad-Sohna section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and is being seen as a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at reducing congestion on heavily crowded city roads. Once operational, the corridor will provide a signal-free route for commuters travelling toward Haryana, Rajasthan, and the western parts of India while also serving as a crucial access road to Jewar Airport.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari recently inspected the expressway along with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and senior officials from Delhi, Haryana, and the Centre. During the inspection, Gadkari stated that the first leg of the expressway from DND Flyway to Jaitpur is expected to be completed within days and may soon be inaugurated.

A major highlight of the project is the under-construction 31.5-kilometre link road connecting the expressway directly to Noida International Airport at Jewar. Officials believe this corridor will become one of the most important airport connectivity routes in NCR, especially for travellers coming from South Delhi, Faridabad, Noida, and nearby regions.

The expressway project is also part of the Centre’s larger ₹34,000 crore Delhi-NCR infrastructure modernisation plan, which includes new ring roads, elevated corridors, tunnels, and signal-free highways designed to decongest the capital region. According to officials, the Delhi stretch of the expressway begins near Maharani Bagh close to the DND Flyway and passes through Kalindi Kunj, Jaitpur-Mithapur, Faridabad bypass, and eventually links to the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway near Sohna in Haryana.

One of the project’s standout engineering features is the newly developed Network Arch Bridge, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹142.3 crore. The structure includes advanced engineering systems such as inclined crossed hangers, high-tensile steel systems, swivel-type expansion joints, and high-damping rubber bearings. Officials said the bridge also features some of India’s widest pier caps and a towering 47-metre-high arch rib, making it both structurally significant and visually striking.

Authorities have also incorporated environmental restoration measures alongside the infrastructure development. Nearly 10 hectares of land previously used for NTPC fly ash dumping are being transformed into a jungle safari project under the Delhi government as part of compensatory afforestation efforts.

The project is expected to play a critical role in reshaping mobility across Delhi-NCR, especially with the upcoming launch of the Noida International Airport, which is anticipated to become one of the region’s largest aviation hubs. Officials believe the expressway network will not only reduce travel time but also support future economic growth, logistics movement, and regional urban expansion.
