Union Minister for Communications and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions creating a complete value chain of semiconductors in India. This vision includes design, fabrication, and ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) capabilities.

Vaishnaw made this statement while inaugurating Qualcomm’s new design center in Chennai. He emphasized that India now has the necessary capabilities in semiconductor design, fabrication, and ATMP.

The minister also mentioned a program with 104 universities spread across the country. This program provides students with access to the world’s latest design tools, enabling them to learn, experiment, and try out new ideas. This initiative has reportedly been well-received and is making significant progress.

In a significant development for India’s semiconductor ecosystem, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stones for three new chip plants. Two of these are being set up in Gujarat, and one in Assam. The Tata Group is establishing two of these three plants.

The Prime Minister participated in the event ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ virtually. These three semiconductor facilities have financial implications of about Rs 1.25 lakh crore.

Last month, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of three more semiconductor units under 'the Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India. All three units - two in Gujarat and one in Assam – will start construction within the next 100 days.

The semiconductor industry in India is still in a nascent stage, with various local and multinational companies intending to tap its vast potential. The Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India was notified on December 21, 2021, with a total outlay of Rs. 76,000 crore.

This move aligns with PM Modi’s vision of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and positions India as a global hub for Electronic System Design and Manufacturing. The Prime Minister believes that “Made in India” and “Designed in India” chips will play a major role in taking India towards self-reliance and modernisation.
