Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the expanded Terminal-1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). The revamped terminal, which has undergone significant enhancements, promises to elevate the travel experience for millions of passengers.

Key Highlights:

  1. Increased Passenger Capacity:

    • The expanded Terminal-1 can now handle an impressive 40 million passengers annually, effectively doubling its previous capacity of 17 million passengers per year.
    • With this expansion, IGIA becomes one of the few airports worldwide capable of accommodating over 100 million passengers per year when considering all three terminals combined.
  2. Facial Recognition System (DigiYatra):

    • For passengers’ convenience and security, the Delhi airport has implemented a Facial Recognition System at all 24 entry gates.
    • Additionally, there are 108 common usage self-service kiosks where travelers can check-in without assistance from ground staff.
    • The 20 automated tray retrieval systems streamline the security process, ensuring smoother transitions for passengers.
  3. Individual Carrier Systems:

    • The expanded terminal introduces an innovative feature: individual carrier systems. These divide the luggage carousel into cells, minimizing damage to baggage and reducing belt jams.
  4. Self-Baggage Drop Kiosks:

    • Travelers can now drop off their baggage without relying on airport staff. The terminal boasts 100 check-in counters equipped with 36 self-baggage drop kiosks.
  5. Foundation Stones for New Airports:

    • In a historic move, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for four new airports across India, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing air connectivity.
    • The airports include Shravasti, Moradabad, Chitrakoot, and Aligarh.
  6. Cost and Timeline:

    • The expanded Terminal-1 was completed at a cost of Rs 4,600 crore.
    • It is expected to be fully operational within the next two months.

PM Modi’s Vision:

Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the transformative projects, stating, “Today, projects worth about Rs 34,000 crore have been inaugurated and foundation stones laid in many states. All these efforts will make air travel more comfortable and accessible for the common man of the country.”

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Minister of State for Civil Aviation General VK Singh.

As we eagerly await the terminal’s full functionality, the expanded Terminal-1 stands as a testament to India’s commitment to modernizing its aviation infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
