Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Wednesday defended Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s response in the Rajya Sabha, amid opposition criticism that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have addressed the House directly. Athawale emphasized that Shah, being a senior minister, was well within his right to respond on behalf of the government.

“Today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded in the Rajya Sabha, and the opposition parties were saying that the Prime Minister should have responded,” Athawale said, reacting to demands made by several opposition leaders during the session.

He clarified that there was no breach of procedure, asserting, “According to the rules, any minister can respond, and Amit Shah is a senior minister, and he has also shed light on many issues in detail.”

Athawale’s remarks come after a heated session in Parliament, where opposition MPs demanded a direct response from the Prime Minister on certain national issues. However, the government chose Home Minister Amit Shah to respond, citing parliamentary norms.

The statement by Athawale seeks to put to rest the growing narrative from opposition benches that the Prime Minister is avoiding direct engagement in the House. It also highlights the government’s confidence in Shah’s detailed and authoritative handling of the discussion.

As political tensions continue to flare in the monsoon session of Parliament, Athawale’s comments underline the government's stand on maintaining parliamentary decorum while addressing key national matters through designated ministers.
