Union Minister JP Nadda Criticizes Congress on Defence Policies and Praises Modi for 'One Rank One Pension'

Delhi: Union Minister and BJP President JP Nadda has sharply criticized the previous Congress-led UPA government for its handling of defense policies and the status of security forces. Speaking at a press briefing in Delhi, Nadda contrasted the past administration’s approach with the current government’s achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Nadda remarked, "Some people used the security forces but did not give them the position they deserved... People were demanding 'One Rank One Pension' from 1971... 40 years passed by but nobody bothered." He noted that the 'One Rank One Pension' (OROP) scheme, which was a long-standing demand of ex-servicemen, was finally implemented by Prime Minister Modi’s government. The scheme, he highlighted, has allocated Rs 1,25,000 crore to benefit ex-servicemen, rectifying a longstanding grievance.

Nadda's comments also addressed the operational constraints faced by Indian soldiers during the UPA regime. He recounted a poignant example from the Kathua border, saying, "When Pakistan used to attack Poonch and Rajouri... a soldier standing at the Kathua border used to say, 'I am standing here but my hands are tied... when the firing happens, I inform Nagrota, Nagrota informs Chandi Mandir and Chandi Mandir informs Delhi.' And, Delhi used to ask soldiers to hold the fire."

The BJP President contrasted this with the current administration’s approach under Modi, stating, "But PM Modi said to keep retaliating until the firing stops." This statement underscores a perceived shift in policy towards more proactive and decisive responses in defense operations.

Nadda’s remarks highlight a broader effort by the BJP to differentiate its record on defense and veteran affairs from that of the Congress party. By emphasizing the achievements of the Modi administration, including the implementation of OROP and changes in military engagement protocols, the BJP aims to reinforce its commitment to the armed forces and garner support from the defense community.
