Union Minister Piyush Goyal has stepped forward to defend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud's residence for Ganesh Puja, following criticism from opposition leaders. The controversy arose after images of PM Modi participating in the traditional festival at the Chief Justice’s home were met with disapproval from various political quarters.

In response to the criticism, Goyal addressed the matter with a statement emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of the Ganesh Utsav, a festival deeply rooted in Indian tradition. “I have seen on television that some opposition leaders are objecting to the depiction of PM Modi and CJI DY Chandrachud worshipping Lord Ganesha according to Indian tradition,” Goyal remarked. “I felt really sad seeing this.”

Goyal highlighted the historical context of Ganesh Utsav, recalling how Lokmanya Tilak initiated the public celebration of the festival in 1893 to unite people in the struggle for India’s independence. “Lokmanya Tilak started the tradition of celebrating Ganesh Utsav publicly to unite people to fight for the country's independence,” he said.

The Minister defended the Prime Minister’s actions by underscoring Modi’s appeal for national unity and development. “PM Modi appealed to the entire country that we all should come together to develop India,” Goyal noted. He also spoke to Modi’s personal commitment to public service, attributing his courage and dedication to his cultural and religious practices. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a cultured person; he gets more courage from religion, and his courage increases to serve the country,” Goyal added.

The remarks come amidst a backdrop of heightened political sensitivity, with opposition figures questioning the appropriateness of the visit. Goyal’s defense frames the visit as an extension of Modi’s commitment to fostering national unity and cultural heritage, positioning it as a gesture of respect and inclusion rather than a political statement.

As the debate continues, the incident reflects broader discussions about the intersection of religion, culture, and politics in India, highlighting the complexities of public life in the country.
