Union Minister Piyush Goyal Engages in Key Bilateral Talks at G7 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Italy

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, played a pivotal role in advancing India's economic diplomacy during the G7 Trade Ministers' meeting held at Villa San Giovanni, Italy. The meeting served as a significant platform for fostering international trade relations and economic cooperation amidst global challenges.

Attending alongside counterparts from G7 nations and other key economies, Minister Goyal engaged in a series of high-level bilateral meetings aimed at enhancing India's economic partnerships on the global stage.

During his discussions with Antonio Tajani, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Minister Goyal emphasized enhancing bilateral trade and investments, expanding industrial co-production, and strengthening collaboration in clean technologies. Minister Goyal commended Mr. Tajani for hosting a productive G7 Trade Ministers' meeting, underscoring India's commitment to deepening ties with Italy.

Minister Goyal also met with Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, to explore avenues for boosting India-EU trade and economic collaborations, including advancing negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Discussions focused on mutual interests such as sustainable development, digital economy, and innovation.

In talks with New Zealand's Trade Minister, Mr. Todd McClay, Minister Goyal discussed strategies to elevate bilateral trade and investment relations. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the robust trade partnership between India and New Zealand, exploring new avenues for cooperation in sectors like agriculture, education, and technology.

Further highlighting India's proactive engagement, Minister Goyal congratulated Mr. Jonathan Reynolds, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, on his appointment and discussed advancing discussions on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. The dialogue aimed at deepening economic ties post-Brexit and exploring opportunities in sectors like finance, healthcare, and renewable energy.

In a significant meeting with Dr. Robert Habeck, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs & Climate Action, Germany, Minister Goyal discussed opportunities to strengthen the growing Indo-German trade relationship. The discussions centered on upcoming Inter-Governmental Consultations and initiatives to enhance cooperation in industry 4.0, renewable energy, and skill development.

Minister Goyal's participation underscored India's proactive approach in engaging with global economies to foster trade and economic cooperation amid challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and climate change impacts.

During the session, Minister Goyal emphasized the importance of resilient global supply chains, citing initiatives such as the G20 Generic Framework for Mapping Global Value Chains (GVCs), the Trilateral Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI), and India's efforts under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC).

He highlighted India's initiatives with strategic partners like the US, GCC countries, and the EU, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), aimed at strengthening supply chain resilience and promoting seamless connectivity across markets.

Minister Goyal proposed collaborative efforts among trusted partners to bolster global supply chains in critical sectors such as critical minerals, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and green energy. He advocated for public-private partnerships, investments in infrastructure, innovation, and harmonized regulatory frameworks across G7 countries and partner nations.
