New Delhi — Amid controversy over reports of NCERT textbooks describing Mughal rulers with terms such as “ruthless” for Babur, “brutal” for Akbar, and “temple destroyer” for Aurangzeb, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar has defended the content, calling it a reflection of historical truth.

“These are historical facts no one can deny,” Majumdar said. “When Hemu was killed, Akbar was a child. Then he was brutal... Akbar had a harem. How many of those queens were Hindu? They were abducted.”

He further asserted that Mughal rulers, including Akbar and Aurangzeb, committed acts that should not be concealed from students. “We cannot say that any Muslim ruler or a Mughal was not brutal... Aurangzeb was a temple destroyer. Who demolished the Kashi Vishwanath Temple? Aurangzeb’s own biography mentions how many temples he destroyed.”

Emphasizing the importance of factual education, the Minister added, “History is nothing more than science, nothing less than science. The facts should come forward. And the children should also know the truth.”

The remarks have sparked renewed debate on how historical figures are portrayed in school curricula and the balance between historical accuracy and communal sensitivity.
