New Delhi — Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has praised the Khelo India program for its significant role in nurturing young athletic talent in India. Speaking at a recent event, Mandaviya highlighted the success of the program, noting its pivotal role in the career development of athletes like Manu Bhaker.

Mandaviya elaborated on the dual initiatives under the Khelo India program that are designed to identify and support emerging talent. “Manu Bhaker too started her career with Khelo India,” he remarked, emphasizing the program’s importance in the early stages of athletes' careers.

The minister explained that Khelo India operates through two key initiatives:

  1. KIRTI Project: This initiative focuses on identifying young talent from across the country. Talented youth are selected, placed in hostels, and provided with top-notch training and coaching to prepare them for competitive sports. Mandaviya noted that Manu Bhaker was one of the beneficiaries of this project.

  2. TARGET Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS): This program provides special training and support to athletes who show promise. Through TOPS, athletes receive financial aid, access to elite coaching, and opportunities for international training. Mandaviya proudly shared that all 117 athletes participating in the recent Olympic Games were supported through this scheme, with some receiving coaching abroad in countries like Switzerland and Germany.

Mandaviya expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes of these initiatives, stating that they have significantly contributed to the athletes’ preparation and performance. “I am delighted to tell you that all athletes benefitted from it,” he said.

Looking ahead, Mandaviya extended his best wishes to the 34 athletes competing in events on the day of his speech, affirming the government's continued support for sports development in the country. His comments underscore the ongoing commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and resources available to Indian athletes, ensuring they have the best possible conditions to excel on the global stage.
