554.9 Million Users Linked to UPI by June 2026, Government Highlights Digital Payment Growth

Date:

India’s digital payment platform, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has onboarded over 554.9 million (55.49 crore) users by June 2026. The central government informed Parliament on Monday that during the 2025-26 financial year, 24,161.69 crore transactions were conducted via UPI, with a total value of ₹314.23 lakh crore.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that UPI transactions have witnessed consistent and rapid growth over the past five years.

According to the government, 4,595.61 crore transactions worth ₹84.16 lakh crore were recorded via UPI in 2021-22. This figure rose to 8,371.44 crore transactions valued at ₹139.15 lakh crore in 2022-23.

Subsequently, in 2023-24, there were 13,112.95 crore transactions totalling ₹199.95 lakh crore. Meanwhile, in 2024-25, UPI facilitated 18,586.60 crore transactions valued at ₹260.56 lakh crore.

The government stated that the National Payments Corporation of India International (NIPL)—a wholly-owned subsidiary of NPCI—is expanding Indian digital payment systems like UPI and RuPay to foreign countries. This facilitates digital payments abroad for Indian tourists and the Indian diaspora. Additionally, it assists partner nations in developing real-time payment systems similar to UPI.

The government, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the NPCI have taken several measures to ensure the security of digital payments. These include risk-based transaction limits, safeguards against unauthorised changes to mobile numbers, enhanced security for SMS-based authentication, and additional security standards for UPI apps. Additionally, the NPCI has released the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 and the Mobile Application Security Framework to make the UPI network even more secure and robust.

The government also stated that UPI has been linked with the payment systems of several countries, thereby boosting both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) international digital payments.
