Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the launch of a new portal on Monday for registration under the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ (PM Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme). Under this scheme, the Delhi government will bear the entire cost of installing solar panels with a capacity of up to 3 kW, ensuring that consumers do not face any financial burden.
Free Solar Panels for 2.25 Lakh Households
The Chief Minister stated that solar panels would be installed in 2.25 lakh households on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. She described this initiative as a major step towards promoting green energy in the national capital. Gupta said, “This is a moment of great joy and can be considered a significant achievement of the PM-led ‘double-engine’ government in Delhi, directly benefiting the people of the city.”
Politics of Development vs. Politics of Freebies
Taking aim at previous governments, the Chief Minister remarked that while past administrations engaged in the “politics of freebies,” the current government practices the “politics of development.” She added, “Therefore, the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ will prove to be a crucial step towards generating green energy in Delhi.”
Portal Launched; Citizens Can Register Now
CM Gupta clarified, “The Delhi government will cover the entire cost of installing solar panels with a capacity of up to 3 kW; this means the consumer will not have to spend a single rupee—it will be at zero cost to them. We have launched the portal for the people of Delhi today. Citizens can register on it, and the process of installing free solar panels in 2.25 lakh households by the Delhi government will proceed on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis.”
With the launch of this portal, eligible residents of the national capital can now apply online to avail the benefits of the rooftop solar scheme.
Expansion of the Centre’s Flagship Scheme in Delhi
The ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ is a flagship initiative of the Central Government, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024. Its primary objective is to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to 1 crore households across the country through the installation of rooftop solar systems. This move by the Delhi government is expected to give a significant boost to solar energy adoption in the capital.
