Report Projects Threefold Growth in India’s Commercial and Industrial Renewable Energy Capacity by 2032

India’s nuclear energy capacity is expected to triple to 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2032. In 2025, this capacity stood at 32 GW. Simultaneously, the installed capacity of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) is projected to increase more than tenfold, reaching 31 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

This information is provided in a new report released by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and the Customised Energy Storage Alliance. According to the report, the primary drivers behind this growth include the acceleration of corporate decarbonization goals, the need for energy security, and state-level mandates regarding renewable energy certification.

Key Highlights:

  • Maharashtra has made energy storage mandatory for every new renewable energy project with a capacity exceeding 100 kilowatts (kW).
  • Distribution companies (DISCOMs) are required to source 10% of their total electricity from storage systems by the 2035-36 fiscal year.
  • States like Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan are also promoting this sector through incentives, waivers on certain charges, and other supportive measures.

The report states that industrial units will be at the forefront of adopting storage technology, accounting for over 50% of the total market share. Additionally, demand for storage is growing most rapidly in critical sectors such as data centres, hospitals, metro systems, railway stations, and airports.

Report Launch at IESW 2026

This report will be released during ‘India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2026,’ scheduled to be held from July 8–10, 2026, at Yashobhoomi (IICC) in New Delhi. The event is expected to feature over 200 exhibitors and attract more than 10,000 industry stakeholders. Debmalya Sen, President of IESW, stated, “Our new research reveals that India’s C&I (Commercial & Industrial) and decarbonization market is not merely growing; it is rapidly advancing into a new phase. Driven by demand from corporate entities and allied sectors, this has evolved from a niche requirement into a pivotal business segment.”

This will prove to be a crucial platform for accelerating the clean energy transition, addressing policy disparities, and devising commercial solutions. The C&I segment and automotive storage are playing an increasingly vital role in achieving India’s clean energy goals.
