Defence Manufacturing Milestone: First India-Built C-295 Transport Aircraft Prepared for Trial Flight

Date:

India has achieved a major success in the defense sector as the country’s first C-295 Military Transport Aircraft is ready. Now it is all set for its first flight test. This aircraft has been manufactured at the Tata-Airbus factory located in Vadodara, Gujarat. This is a historic step towards military aircraft manufacturing in India. This entire project is being carried out under a major defense agreement between the renowned aircraft manufacturer Airbus and India’s Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). After the successful test of this aircraft, the strength of the Indian Air Force will increase significantly.

The aircraft has been assembled at the Vadodara final assembly line, which is the first of its kind in India for a military transport aircraft. Officials confirmed that the aircraft will now undergo a series of ground and flight trials to assess its performance, systems integration, and operational readiness before induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The C-295 programme is being implemented under a ₹21,935 crore agreement between India and Spain for the supply of 56 aircraft. Under the deal, 16 aircraft are being delivered directly from Spain in fly-away condition, while the remaining 40 aircraft are being manufactured in India under the Make in India initiative. The project is seen as a major example of defence manufacturing localisation and technology transfer.

According to defence officials, the programme is designed to replace the Indian Air Force’s ageing transport fleet, particularly the Avro aircraft, and strengthen tactical airlift capabilities. The C-295 is intended for troop transport, cargo movement, medical evacuation, and special operations, and is capable of operating from short and semi-prepared airstrips.

A senior Indian Air Force official recently reviewed the progress of the aircraft at the Vadodara facility, where the final assembly line is located. Officials stated that the completion of the first India-built aircraft reflects significant progress in domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities and industrial collaboration.

The facility was inaugurated in October 2024 by the leadership of India and Spain, marking a strategic partnership aimed at expanding India’s defence production ecosystem. Since then, the project has progressed through phased assembly, component integration, and systems testing involving both Indian and international engineers.

Defence sources said the programme also involves extensive technology transfer and local supply chain development, with a large number of components being manufactured in India. The initiative is expected to increase domestic participation in high-precision aerospace engineering and create a long-term manufacturing ecosystem.

According to officials, following successful testing, the C-295 aircraft will be inducted into the Indian Air Force. Deliveries of these aircraft will continue in the coming years, and the use of indigenous components will gradually increase.

This aircraft represents a major step towards making India “self-reliant” in the defense sector. It will significantly improve both India’s defense industries and military capabilities.
