After waiting for nearly 8 years, 36 families of the Harsh Vihar area in Delhi finally got their electricity connection. Delhi’s chief minister Rekha Gupta intervened in this issue and, after hearing the long-standing issues of the 36 families, she directed her staff to resolve this issue on an urgent basis.
This case is from the A-3 block of Harsh Vihar in the Gokulpuri area, where 36 families were living without the proper electricity connection from 2018. These families have raised these issues multiple times, but no solution has been provided to them. They finally raised this issue in public grievance hearings, and their issue has been resolved now.
Lack of Sub-Station Delayed Electrification
According to officials, around 50 to 60 houses had already been constructed in the locality by 2018, but regular electricity supply could not be provided because land was unavailable for setting up an Electric Sub-Station (ESS). As a result, many families were forced to depend on temporary power arrangements or live without proper electricity for years.
Following government intervention, authorities installed the necessary transformer infrastructure and began issuing electricity demand notes and meter connections to eligible households. Officials said the remaining families in the area are also expected to receive regular electricity connections soon.
Residents Welcome Long-Awaited Relief
Residents reportedly met the Chief Minister and expressed gratitude after the electrification process finally began. North-East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari was also present during the interaction.
The restoration of regular electricity supply is expected to significantly improve living conditions in the area, especially during Delhi’s extreme summer temperatures. Experts note that access to stable electricity directly impacts education, healthcare, safety, and economic activity in urban settlements.
Growing Pressure on Delhi’s Power Infrastructure
The development comes at a time when Delhi is witnessing rising electricity demand due to rapid urbanisation, metro expansion, electric mobility, and infrastructure growth. The Delhi government recently projected that the city’s peak power demand could rise to over 13,000 MW by 2031, prompting plans for major investment in power infrastructure.
Urban planners say the Harsh Vihar case highlights the need for better coordination between housing development and civic infrastructure planning in rapidly growing residential colonies.
Basic Services Remain Key Urban Challenge
Experts believe that access to uninterrupted electricity remains one of the most critical urban governance issues in expanding cities like Delhi. Delays in power connectivity often affect education, digital access, employment opportunities, and overall quality of life for residents.
The Harsh Vihar electrification drive is being viewed as an example of how administrative intervention and infrastructure upgrades can help resolve long-standing civic issues in underserved neighbourhoods.
