Amit Shah Calls 2014–2026 a ‘Golden Period’ for Internal Security, Highlights Major Gains Against Terrorism and Maoism

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday described the period from 2014 to 2026 as a “golden phase” in India’s internal security history, asserting that decisive policy measures and coordinated security operations have significantly reduced long-standing threats across the country.

Addressing an event in Delhi, Shah said that before 2014, three major challenges had posed serious threats to India’s internal stability for decades — militancy in the Kashmir region, insurgency in the Northeast, and Maoist violence spread across multiple states. He noted that these issues had deeply impacted governance, development, and the safety of citizens for nearly three to four decades.

The Home Minister highlighted the repeal of Article 370 as a turning point in restoring peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. According to Shah, the decision paved the way for stronger integration, improved law enforcement coordination, and accelerated development initiatives in the region. He stated that incidents of violence in Kashmir, the Northeast, and Maoist-affected areas have collectively declined by nearly 80 percent since 2014.

Shah further emphasized that the government adopted a multi-pronged approach combining strict security action with infrastructure development, welfare schemes, and improved connectivity in sensitive regions. He credited enhanced coordination between central and state agencies for the substantial progress made in curbing insurgency and extremist activities.

Referring to Maoist-affected regions, the Home Minister said the government remains firmly committed to eliminating left-wing extremism. He assured citizens that by March 31, 2026, the country would be freed from Maoist violence. “I want to reassure the people of the country that by 31 March 2026, we will succeed in freeing the entire country from Maoist violence,” he stated.

Shah reiterated that national security remains a top priority for the government and underlined that sustained peace is essential for economic growth, investment, and social progress. He said the significant decline in violence across key regions demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s security and development-driven strategy.

The remarks underscore the Centre’s claim that firm policy decisions and sustained security operations over the past decade have fundamentally transformed India’s internal security landscape.
