New Delhi: The Pragati Maidan tunnel will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. The government has started decorations and other arrangements for this. The PM will take a round of the tunnel and then address a gathering inside Hall Number 5 of the Pragati Maidan complex. A photo gallery and a short movie clip have also been prepared inside the tunnel for him, "said LC Goyal, chairman and managing director of the India Trade Promotion Organisation."
The photo gallery will showcase the different stages of completion of the project. The main tunnel, starting from Purana Qila Road, will provide smooth access to commuters from India Gate to Ring Road and the NCR cities of Ghaziabad and Noida through the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

The only signal on Ring Road between Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and Ashram has been removed and an underpass is being constructed there. This will cater to traffic moving between Sarai Kale Khan and Mathura Road.
Four underpasses have been constructed on Mathura Road to provide U-turns near Sunder Nagar, the National Sports Club of India and the Supreme Court. These will help in removing traffic lights on Bhagwan Das Road, Shershah Road, Bhairon Marg, and Subramania Bharati Marg, making this stretch signal-free for seamless traffic movement.
The foundation stone for the integrated transit network of a tunnel and six underpasses, which are a part of the redevelopment of the Pragati Maidan project, was laid down by vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu in December 2017. The cost of the project was around Rs 923 crore.
The main reasons for the delay in the project were the pandemic, which led to lockdowns, and the environmental ban because of high levels of air pollution, which put a curb on construction for months during the winter.
The tunnel is Delhi’s widest underground six-lane tunnel, measuring 1.6km in length, including the ramps, and a width varying from 28.2 metres to 42 metres. It is one of the longest "box pushed" tunnels going under a seven-track railway line. "The opening of underpass number five has been delayed due to flooding and will take 4-5 weeks to be completed," said Goyal.
