BJP’s Sambit Patra Accuses Mamata Banerjee of Threatening Riots over SIR in Bengal

New Delhi: BJP MP and national spokesperson Sambit Patra on Friday strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that she issued a veiled threat of riots if the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is carried out in the state.

Patra said, “Mamata Banerjee said that if SIR is done, riots will break out in Bengal and there will be horrifying consequences. The rioting will be done by you, because it is your government which is in power there, and it is your Police there.” He accused the Trinamool Congress chief of attempting to intimidate institutions and warned that such statements could provoke unrest.

The BJP leader further alleged that Banerjee was willing to “riot and shed blood in Bengal for Bangladeshis and Rohingyas,” referring to her remarks as a dangerous attempt to shield illegal voters.

The controversy stems from the Election Commission’s planned SIR drive to update and verify voter rolls across West Bengal. While Banerjee has claimed the exercise could be politically misused, the BJP has called her comments irresponsible and inflammatory.

The remarks have intensified political tensions in the state, with the BJP urging the Centre and the Election Commission to take note of what it calls an “open threat” from the Chief Minister.
