Delhi: The adoption of digital technology in essential public services has seen a significant surge, with the government revealing that nearly 98% of LPG refill bookings across India are now being made online, marking a major shift in consumer behaviour and service delivery systems. The development reflects a broader push toward digital governance and transparency in fuel distribution.

According to official data released on Sunday, the overwhelming majority of LPG consumers are now relying on online platforms such as mobile apps, websites, and digital service portals to book their cooking gas refills. This transition has been accompanied by improvements in delivery monitoring, with around 94% of LPG deliveries now authenticated through a Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system to ensure accountability and prevent misuse.

The government highlighted that the introduction of DAC-based verification has played a crucial role in curbing diversion and black marketing of subsidised LPG cylinders, a problem that had previously affected the distribution network. By requiring consumers to share a code at the time of delivery, authorities are able to track each transaction more effectively and ensure that cylinders reach the intended recipients.

Officials noted that the shift toward digital bookings has also significantly enhanced consumer convenience and efficiency. Users can now place refill orders instantly without visiting distributors, reducing waiting times and improving access, particularly in urban areas. The move has also contributed to better demand management and streamlined supply chains, allowing oil marketing companies to respond more quickly to booking patterns.

The rise in online bookings comes at a time when the government has been actively working to maintain stable LPG supply across the country, despite global uncertainties affecting energy markets. Authorities reiterated that there is no shortage of cooking gas, and distribution systems continue to operate smoothly with timely deliveries being ensured. In recent weeks, the government has also taken several enforcement measures to strengthen the LPG ecosystem. These include raids against hoarding and illegal diversion, stricter monitoring of distributors, and the use of technology to improve oversight. Such efforts have helped build greater consumer trust in the system, encouraging more users to shift to digital booking methods.

The data also reflects a broader transformation in India’s public service delivery model, where technology-driven solutions are increasingly replacing traditional manual processes. Experts believe that this trend will continue to grow, especially as smartphone penetration and internet access expand across rural and semi-urban regions.

At the same time, authorities have urged consumers to avoid panic booking or stockpiling of LPG cylinders, emphasizing that supply remains adequate and well-managed. Citizens have been encouraged to rely on official digital platforms for bookings and information, rather than visiting distributors physically or depending on unverified sources.

The increasing reliance on online systems is also aligned with the government’s larger vision of Digital India, which aims to enhance transparency, reduce leakages, and improve service delivery across sectors. In the case of LPG distribution, the integration of booking platforms with delivery authentication has created a more accountable and user-friendly ecosystem.
