Guru Dronacharya, IFFCO Chowk Stations May Get Multi-Level Parking Boost

In a bid to tackle persistent traffic congestion and parking shortages around key metro hubs, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed the development of multilevel parking facilities at Guru Dronacharya and IFFCO Chowk metro stations.

The proposal has been submitted to the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) and is currently under review. The move is aimed at streamlining parking management and improving last-mile connectivity for thousands of daily commuters using these stations.

Addressing parking crunch

Both Guru Dronacharya and IFFCO Chowk stations, located on the busy Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro, witness heavy footfall, especially during peak hours. However, limited parking infrastructure has led to haphazard roadside parking, contributing to traffic congestion in surrounding areas.

Officials said the planned multilevel parking structures will help organise vehicle movement, reduce illegal parking, and ease traffic pressure near station entry and exit points.

Project details

As per the proposal, identified land parcels near both stations will be utilised for the project. The parking facilities are expected to accommodate a significant number of vehicles, catering to daily commuters who rely on personal transport to access metro services.

The project is likely to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, allowing private players to participate in construction and operation, while ensuring efficient management and maintenance.

Boost to urban mobility

Urban planners and transport experts believe that such infrastructure upgrades are crucial for improving urban mobility in rapidly growing cities like Gurugram. Better parking facilities at metro stations are expected to encourage more people to opt for public transport, thereby reducing dependence on private vehicles for longer commutes.

Next steps

A final decision on the proposal is expected after HSVP completes its evaluation. Once approved, the project will move into the planning and implementation phase, with timelines to be announced subsequently.

Outlook

The proposed multilevel parking facilities are expected to significantly improve commuter convenience and decongest key transit points in Gurugram, supporting broader efforts to enhance public transport infrastructure in the National Capital Region.
