New Delhi: The national capital is set to come under severe heatwave conditions starting today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of a sharp rise in temperatures across Delhi-NCR.

According to weather officials, Delhi will experience heatwave conditions between Wednesday and Friday, with the mercury expected to soar to around 42–44°C in several areas, which is significantly above normal levels for this time of the year.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, advising residents to take precautions against intense heat exposure, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses. The warning indicates that weather conditions are likely to remain harsh over the next few days, with hot and dry winds intensifying discomfort during daytime hours.

Officials said the heatwave is expected to persist through the week, affecting daily life, especially during peak afternoon hours when outdoor conditions may become hazardous. Temperatures are projected to remain well above seasonal averages, making it one of the hotter spells of the season so far.

Meteorological data suggests that maximum temperatures in the capital may stay in the range of 41–44°C, with only limited relief expected in the coming days. The IMD has also indicated that warm nights may add to discomfort, as heat fails to dissipate fully after sunset.

Authorities have urged people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers have been advised to take extra precautions.

The current spell is part of a broader heatwave pattern affecting several parts of northwest India, as temperatures continue to rise across multiple states under prevailing dry weather conditions.

With the capital bracing for extreme heat, civic agencies and health departments are expected to remain on alert to manage potential heat-related emergencies.
