Specialised Machine-Based Tree Transplantation: Delhi to Select Approved Agencies

The Delhi government has announced plans to empanel specialised agencies equipped with advanced tree transplantation machines, in a move aimed at improving the survival rate of relocated trees and strengthening the city’s environmental conservation efforts.

According to officials, the initiative is designed to ensure that only technically qualified agencies with modern machinery, trained manpower, and scientific expertise are allowed to undertake tree transplantation work in the capital. The empanelment process will be carried out by the Forest Department through an Expression of Interest (EoI).

The selected agencies will be responsible for executing end-to-end tree transplantation operations, including feasibility assessment, scientific planning, root preparation, mechanical extraction, transportation, replantation, and post-transplant maintenance such as irrigation and soil treatment.

Officials said the decision is part of a broader strategy to enhance urban green cover and reduce tree loss during infrastructure development projects. The government has also emphasized the use of specialised tree spade machines and hydraulic equipment, which are expected to significantly reduce damage to roots and improve survival rates compared to traditional methods.

A key requirement under the empanelment framework is adherence to scientific transplantation standards, with agencies expected to ensure higher accountability and better post-transplant monitoring of trees.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns over the low survival rate of transplanted trees in Delhi, which officials say has necessitated stronger oversight and the use of modern technology to improve outcomes.

Authorities believe the initiative will help shift tree transplantation practices from manual and less efficient methods to more technology-driven, environmentally sustainable solutions, ultimately supporting the capital’s long-term green infrastructure goals.
