Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Speaks on Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in Rajya Sabha

In a significant address in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju raised concerns over the actions of the previous UPA government regarding prime Waqf properties. Speaking about the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025, Rijiju emphasized the actions taken by the UPA government just before the 2014 general elections, which he referred to as a strategic move for political purposes.

According to Rijiju, on March 5, 2014, just before the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, the UPA government denotified 123 prime properties that were under the ownership of the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry. These properties were then handed over to the Delhi Waqf Board, a move which Rijiju argued was politically motivated and designed to influence the electorate just ahead of the elections.

Rijiju highlighted that the transfer of these properties had been done hastily and questioned the rationale behind such actions. He stated that this move undermined transparency and accountability, and has led to a situation where prime land was not being utilized effectively, with concerns over the management of these assets.

His remarks are significant in the ongoing discussions about the Waqf Amendment Bill, which aims to bring in reforms to ensure better management and utilization of Waqf properties, making them more transparent and beneficial for the community.
